ALIS

In my summer ALIS book, A Yellow Raft in Blue water Aunt Ida when she was young her aunt got pregnant with her father’s child. The Family didn’t want this word to get out around the town and so her father and mother decide that she and her aunt will go to Denver until her aunt has the baby and then it will be Ida’s child. So the family tells the town if they ask that Ida is pregnant. Once it was decided that Ida would have to be the mother of the child she had go with all her heart even though it was hard to. Once it
was done there was no turning back she had to go and move on being the mother of this child.

In my second ALIS book, The Joy Luck Club, Suyuan woo, makes, Jing-Mei woo, her daughter, play the piano. “I never really listened to what I was playing. I daydreamed about being somewhere else, about being someone else.” This quote explains how after playing for a long time Jing-Mei begins to lose interest in piano because she realizes that her mom uses her accomplishments to play my daughter is better than your daughter. This makes Jing-Mei lose interest and begin playing piano without her heart making her playing no longer sound any good.

The Crucible

In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible John Proctor had an affair with Abigail and knew that may have something to do with why she is accusing his wife of witchcraft. He ends up telling the courts this even though he knows it will give him a bad name. He decided to do this because if he didn’t it would not be following his heart and telling the truth.Telling the truth was what was more important to him and it was what he believed in. You can tell that he was not okay with lying because he dies in the end of The Crucible because he will not admit to witchcraft. Once he chose to go done the path of telling the truth about him and Abigail there was no turning back and had go with all of his heart, because it would ruin him.

The Village

In the film The Village the elders had made the village, to escape evil and lose. Once they had decided to do this they couldn’t just say the woods are a place you can’t go. They had to come up with some reason why they never went into the woods or into the towns. Once the village was formed they had to do everything to keep it a secret and believe that this was the right thing to do. The elders all had to go with all there heart into the village and couldn’t just keeping living their without it. Their hearts gave the elders strength to do what they had to do to keep the child from discovering secrets and finding out too much information.

Gothic Stories

The short story “William Wilson” by Edgar Allan PoeWilliam Wilson.doc tells the story of a narrator and his doppelganger. “Be this as it may, O now began to feel inspiration of burning hope, and at length nurtured in my secret thoughts a stern and desperate resolution that would submit no longer to be enslaved.” This inspiration probably came from his heart. Once he got the inspiration from his heart he knew what he had to do in order to become more satisfied. The narrator had this doppelganger which he could not seem to get rid of until he kills him in the end of the story. His doppelganger’s death helps the narrator to move on be more happy with the way he is. Through out the story you get the feeling that the narrator compares himself to the William Wilson and feels that doppelganger is better then him, and will not be happy until he gone.

In “The Minister’s Black Veil” by Nathaniel Hawthorne TheMinisterBlackVeil.docthe minister’s decision to put the black veil on comes from his heart. The minister knew that once he decided to put the black veil on he would have to continue to wear the veil to prove his point. He was able to prove his point that no one will ever know who you really are here on Earth. No one can judge you here. No one will ever truly know us because they can’t see our heart. For this reason we must act by following our heart and doing things with the passion of our heart, because that is the only way anyone will know our heart.

Romantic poetry

The poem, “The Castle-Builder” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Castle builder.doc the last stanza links to my personal philosophy. Your dreams come from your heart and you can't achieve those dreams if your heart is not in it. When it says "listen to the voices in the upper air" it is telling us to listen to our hearts, which one needs to do if one wants to be truly happy. The last line reminds us to never let go of the young childhood state where things easily give one a feeling of mystery. In this state one feels like anything is possible and it is a worry free mind set, which one needs when they follow your heart.

Transcendentalism
In "Life Without Principle" Thoreau, makes many points about which principles one should live their life with. He says “Do not hire a man who does your work for money, but him who does it for love of it.” Thoreau is saying that one should not hire a person who is only looking for money. If you hire someone who is just looking for the money then you will get a lower quality of work than if you hire someone who loves what they do. If one loves what they do then they are going with all their heart because they love what they do. If one doesn’t love what they do then they are have trouble following their heart and going with their heart.

In Walden chapter twoThoreau talks about living and what to live for and what it truly means to be alive. He says “Why should we knock under and go with the stream?” He strongly disagrees with conformity and says that we must put society away and go follow our hearts do what we feel we are called to do. By going against the stream instead of with it we are following our hearts. Really to go against the stream you need heart and you can’t just go against the stream with your heart in it or you will not be successful at all.

Thoreau’s most important point he makes in Walden, Chapter XVIII: Conclusion. He says “I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the live which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.” He is saying that if you put your heart in your dreams and keep pursuing them you will achieve them. You may not know when you will be a success but it will come because if you put your heart in it and if you have confidence then it is bond to happen.

Fredrick Douglass
Fredrick Douglass couldn’t have done all the things he did if he didn’t believe what he was doing from the bottom of his heart. He was going against everything that society and the people of that time believed. The fact that he wants to learn to read and write is so out there and uncommon during that time that he had to go there with all his heart. “Though conscious of the difficulty of learning without a teacher, I set out with high hope, and a fixed purpose, at whatever cost of trouble to learn how to read.” He was ready to challenge himself and accept the results because he knew with all his heart that, that was the right thing to do.

The Great Gatsby
In the Great Gatsby, Gatsby does many things out of his desire to win over Daisy. By going to the extremes he tries very hard to win her over. He even goes as far as to get involved in illegal work to earn a lot of money because Daisy would never love a poor man. Jordan tells nick about how hard Gatsby has worked and why he lives where he does, “Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay”(78.) Gatsby is following his heart and going with it, he does all kinds thing just to impress Daisy.
Daisy’s melt down before her wedding showed that she was not sure where she wanted to go, but when she did marry Tom, she went with all her heart. If she was not in it with all her heart she would have left Tom maybe before she met Gatsby for the second time and defiantly would have left him after seeing how much Gatsby loves her. But she stays with Tom because she couldn’t go with all her heart and leave him because her heart is still with Tom.
